Four Oscar Nominated Films Stole the Show at 64th American Cinema Editors

At the 64th yearly American Cinema Editors (ACE) Awards, 4 Oscar nominated films including “Captain Phillips” “American Hustle” and “Frozen” grabbed the popular Eddie that is often considered to increase chances of winning Oscar award. The awards were given under 10 categories of best performances in a motion picture, TV show and documentaries.

Christopher Rouse, the editor of “Captain Phillips”, topped the editor of "Gravity" for Best Edited Movie (Dramatic), while the editors of “American Hustle”, Jay Cassidy, Crispin Struthers & Alan Baumgarten grabbed the award for Best Edited Movie (Comedy/Musical) edging out “The Wolf of Wall Street”.  In the category of Best Edited Animated movie, Jeff Draheim – the editor of Oscar favorite “Frozen” – won the award, while Douglas Blush, Kevin Klauber & Jason Zeldes who edited the documentary “20 Feet From Stardom” grabbed the award for Best Edited Documentary.

It’s the 2nd great tribute for the Oscar nominated film “Captain Phillips” in a week, as it also grabbed Writers Guild of America’s (WGA) adapted screenplay award previous Saturday. The event was well-timed and unexpected for the American Cinema Editors, because the director of the “Captain Phillips”, Paul Greengrass, was the org’s Filmmaker of the Year honoree.

Tom Hanks initially complimented the American Cinema Editors on its 64 years and for providing the biggest trophy in showbiz. “Pardon my language but that thing is fuckin’ huge, Hanks said. After that, Hanks introduced Greengrass and acclaimed “United 93″ (which is based on plane hijacking on 911) as a work of genius. “He made a document, a public service that is all too full of uncomfortable truths,” Hanks said.

“Film is an unruly animal and you cannot master it but it must be mastered and you must control it, that is the paradox of filmmaking… And that happens in a cutting room. I thank the editors, especially my dear dear friend Christopher Rouse,” Greengrass said.

As far as TV show category is concerned, David Rogers & Claire Scanlon –the editors of "The Office – Finale” – took the award for Best Edited Half-Hour Series for TV, while one of the top rated TV shows “Breaking Bad – Felina” won the award for Best Edited One-Hour Series for Commercial TV.

Terry Kelley, who edited “Homeland – Big Man in Tehran”, received the award for Best Edited One-Hour Series for Non-Commercial TV, while Mary Ann Bernard – the editor of “Behind the Candelabra” – won the award for Best Edited Miniseries or short film for TV. Nick Brigden, who edited “Anthony Bourdain – Parts Unknown:  Tokyo”, won the award for Best Edited Non-Scripted Series.
