Moviegoers has much to unwrap in cinemas on Christmas Holidays, with strong holiday sales of 8 mega budget movies releases including “The Wolf of Wall Street” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, “47 Ronin” starring Keanu Reeves, “Lone Survivor” starring Mark Wahlberg, and “Grudge Match” starring Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro. So, we got to see much star power this weekend. However, “The Hobbit” was at the top of the box office last weekend with an overall gross of over $400 million throughout the world.
Paramount’s drama film “The Wolf of Wall Street”, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as lead character and directed by Martin Scorsese, easily topped all the competitors at the holiday box office with nearly $10 million Wednesday, while “The Hobbit” was at second place with around $8.9 million.
“Wolf of Wall Street” is on screens of over 2,500 theaters so far, and seems to be leading among other latest releases, with projected business of around $35 million at the end of this weekend and could compete very strongly against Bilbo Baggins who is projected to have another $40 million to its U.S. cumulative audience. It will definitely cash in the Box office power of Scorsese and star Leonardo DiCaprio; however, its almost 3-hour duration can restrict the number of screenings on a daily basis.
In the meantime, if we talk about the other openers, the most prominent to surprise include Century Fox’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, Universal’s “47 Ronin", and Warner Bros.’ “Grudge Match”, which are expected to make a huge business at the box office in 3 days. However, it seems that 47 Ronin, which is expected to top $10 million at the end of this weekend, will give tough time to both “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and “Grudge Match”, which are estimated to have $7.5 million and $4.5 million respectively at the opening day.
The Mega Budget movies are benefitting from the Christmas holidays and having best time at the box office. Movie Theaters are main attractions for the people on holidays. Therefore, the new releases are expected to do better business at box office in next five days than usual days of the weekend.
Ben Stiller’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” is about a dejected person who travels around the world in pursuit of self-discovery. Although, the tracking has been slow so far, still it doesn’t seem less successful than $175 million budgeted samurai movie “47 Ronin” that has already been launched in Japan and made just $6.2 million total worldwide so far.
