“Game of Thrones” is Most Pirated Show of the Year: Tops “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead”

Digital piracy has always been main apprehension for Hollywood; however, today some professionals have shown that the financial problems of prohibited file sharing are alleviated by its promotional advantages.

HBO’s “Game of Thrones”, which is based on author George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novels, has turned out to be the most pirated TV show of the year twice in a row, while the other most popular TV shows, AMC’s “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead”, are at second and third place respectively, according to piracy news site TorrentFreak.

Approximately 5.9 million people downloaded the Season 3 finale of Game of Thrones from prohibited file-sharing services, most during 1 week after it was released in June, while above 5.4 million viewers subscribed to watch the TV series.

“Breaking Bad”, which turned out to be an all time one of the most popular shows, finished its 5-season run previous fall and was projected to have been downloaded 4.2 million times, while approximately 10.28 million people subscribed to watch the finale. An episode of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” was watched by more than 16 million people and was projected to have been downloaded 3.6 million times.

“Game of Thrones” had also beaten its own piracy record previous year. HBO programming president, Michael Lombardo had termed piracy as “a compliment of sorts” that goes along with “a outrageously thriving show on a subscription network.”

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes had made a witty remark that extensive piracy of “GoT” was “better than an Emmy”. While Vince Gilligan, the creator of “Breaking Bad”, said that piracy increased the show’s “brand awareness,” while also admitting that it was a main issue.

But, the executive producer of “The Walking Dead” – Gale Anne Hurd – expressed sharp disapproval of piracy acts. He said:

“There’s a mistaken belief by many of my peers that piracy is somehow good, that viewers will develop a habit to pay for it. I’m not sure they really understand other than anecdotal evidence that their ratings go up that the people who pirate are not then going to choose legal downloads or legal viewing in the future.”

Following are the top ten most pirated television series of the year:

1. “Game of Thrones” (5.9 million)
2. “Breaking Bad” (4.2 million)
3. “The Walking Dead” (3.6 million)
4. “The Big Bang Theory” (3.4 million)
5. “Dexter” (3.1 million)
6. “How I Met Your Mother” (3 million)
7. “Suits” (2.6 million)
8. “Homeland” (2.4 million)
9. “Vikings” (2.3 million)
10. “Arrow” (2.2 million)
