According to the plot details, Mary-Louise will play the lead role of a women named, Ellen, a somewhat OCD wife, mother of 2 children and accountant who has to deal with everyday routine issues as per her own ways and whose advancement in her personal life is a challenge for the beloved family members around her -- including her spouse, parents and siblings, most of whom run restaurant business.
Sally Robinson, who is known for Dirt, Lifetime's Steel Magnolias reboot, and Iron Jawed Angels, has written the script according to the original idea. She will also serve as executive producer together with Paul Witt and Tony Thomas, who are known for popular TV series like The Golden Girls, Empty Nest, Blossom, and Beauty and the Beast.
NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt, during his term, had presented the Jenji Kohan’s comedy Weed starring Parker as lead actress. For this role, she had grabbed 3 Emmy nominations and 4 Golden Globe mentions. She also won an award for her this character as pot-dealing mother. The latest TV character is likely to mark Mary-Louise Parker's initial TV show performance after Weeds completed its 8-season show last year.
Mary-Louise was among a number of other actresses who got numerous offers this pilot season. According to several media sources, Greenblatt provided her with a load of scripts to read in detail in a bid to enable the actress to work in collaboration with NBC.
Since finishing the Weeds, Mary-Louise -- who received an Emmy and a Golden Globe for outstanding performance under the category of supporting actress in HBO's Angels in America version, has recently appeared in several prominent films including Red 2 opposite Bruce Willis, R.I.P.D., Jamesy Boy and Behaving Badly. She lately finished the TV film Christmas in Conway. She was also nominated for Emmy for her roles in The West Wing and The Robber Bride.
