Diederik Van Rooijen Has Been Announced to Helm the Remake of “The Birds”

After profitably producing hit versions of a number of 80s classic films, Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes banner are well-prepared to come up with a latest version of one of the classic suspense movie Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” in collaboration with Peter Guber’s Mandalay Pictures. After quite a long search for the director of the film, Dutch director Diederik Van Rooijen has been finally announced to helm the project.

Michael Bay will also produce the project in collaboration with Guber and David Zelon. According to the plot of original film, a San Francisco socialite shifts to a small town in the suburbs of California that is abruptly attacked by a number of sorts of sinister flying violent birds. However, the plot details of the remake are still unknown.

Van Rooijen is very famous as a writer and director. He is well-known for writing and directing the Dutch TV show Penoza, which was much admired by the audience and was remade for American audiences as ABC's Red Widow. He is also famous for directing his foreign thriller film Taped, which is being considered to be remade for UK audiences by Sony. Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher, who is known for The Great Gatsby, are the producers of this project. “Daylight” is Diederik Van Rooijen’s one of the most recent projects.

Jonathan Herman has been announced to write the script of the new version of “The Birds”, while Universal Pictures executive vice president of production, Scott Bernstein will supervise the film development for the studio. Earlier, famous Hollywood actress Naomi Watts was in talks for years to play the lead role in the film, but she is no longer attached to this project.

In the original film, Tippi Hedren had played the lead role of Melanie Daniels along with Rod Taylor as Mitch Brenner. The casting process of the remake has not been started yet and it is not confirmed whether or not production team is in talks with any actor to play the role in the film. The production of the film is projected to start in a couple of months.

What do you think about the remake of “The Birds”? Do you think it will be able to live up to the class of 60s horror thriller?
