“300: Rise of an Empire” Topped “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” and “Non-Stop” at Box Office

Far more than expected ancient Greek battle bloodshed and the hot lead actress Eva Green powered “300” sequel “300: Rise of an Empire” to the top position at the home box office with a $45 million opening weekend, beating Rob Minkoff’s animated film “Mr. Peabody & Sherman,” which is running at second spot with $32 million.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ 300: Rise of an Empire – one of the most anticipated sword-and-sandals chronicles which centers on a ferocious sea combat between the Greeks and invading Persians, gave a tough time to a very diverse history Animation family film “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” which revolves around a time-traveling smart dog and a young boy. The two top leading films beat the Liam Neeson’s action thriller “Non-Stop” and the animated comedy “The Lego Movie”, which are running at 3rd spot and fourth spot with $15.3 million and $11 million respectively this weekend.

Bible film “Son of God”, which fell down significantly in its 2nd week, was at fifth spot with $9.7 million, while Wes Anderson's “The Grand Budapest Hotel” almost attracted the most attention and praise with a projected $0.8 million from 4 cinemas, which is a fulgurous average of above $0.2 million per screen, one of the most outstanding openings ever.

“Rise of an Empire”, directed by Noam Murro, was unable to live up to the first weekend of the original “300”, but it's remarkable provided that it's been 7 years since the Zack Snyder-directed film starring Gerard Butler opened with a spectacular $70 million in March 2007. It is released in almost 3500 cinemas which featured 3D. The 3D screening added 63% of the total business, while Imax cinemas delivered 15%. Snyder has written the script of the sequel and also worked as producer.

Warner Bros. is expecting the “Rise of an Empire” to be a worldwide success and so far it is fulfilling the expectations, grossing $87.8 million from more than 50 markets around the world. That's ten percent better than the level of the original film, according to the studio. It is projected to do better in upcoming weeks.
