It’s Confirmed: Donnie Yen and Michelle Yeoh to Star in 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2'

Yes, it has been confirmed and it’s really happening. The Weinstein Company has decided to make a sequel of Ang Lee’s beautiful fantasY epic “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”. Yuen Wo Ping has been announced to direct the film as well as helm the action choreography. Also coming back is action star Michelle Yeoh, who is going to reprise her character as Yu Shu Lien, while IP Man star Donnie Yen has been announced to play the character of Silent Wolf. The sequel is titled as “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: The Green Destiny”. But, it has not been confirmed so far whether or not Ziyi Zhang will reprise her role as Jen Yu.

Weinsteon Company’s co-chairpERson Harvey Weinstein has stated that he much appreciated Ang Lee’s ‘Crouching Tiger’ AND considered it as a one of the best directed films ever. He further said that they are in incredible hands with Yuen Wo Ping at helm of the sequel. Yuen has collaborated with Weinsteon before over several other film projects including Donnie Yen’s "Iron Monkey” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill”. Harvey called Yuen a matchless director as well as choreographer and said that he is very excited to join hands with him once more.

You perhaps think that this is the first time we are hearing about the production of Crouching Tiger 2, but this is not the case. We initially heard the news of Crouching Tiger 2 is in progress a couple of months back, but it has been underway for several years. Until now, the delay was an official conflict over the source material. As that issue has been settled now, the sequel has been projected to start filming this month.

The original film was based on Wang Du Lu’s Pentalogy, and it was blockbuster with record $213 million at the worldwide box office and more than $128 million in America. When it was released in 2000, it quickly turned out to be top earning foreign language movie in US history. It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards under different categories. It won 4 Academy Awards including the award for Best Foreign Language film.

At first, Ronny Yu was considered to helm the project, but later he was turned down and task was assigned to well-known action choreographer Yuen. So far, it seems that Ang Lee will not be contributing in any way in this project. But, you don’t need to be skeptical or worried, as the sequel still got the potential.
