Garth Brooks Says His Marriage to Trisha Yearwood is "The Real Deal"

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood are living proof that true love really does exist. Despite being married to other people in their first meeting back in 1987, their instant connection continued to grow over the years. When they both found themselves single at the same time, their friendship took a romantic turn and they got married in December of 2005. In a recent interview for the Friday, November 29th episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Brooks tells viewers about his journey into falling in love with Yearwood.

When DeGeneres asked his relationship with Yearwood started and grew, Brooks described their meeting, which songwriter Kent Blazy arranged. Blazy thought that Brooks would get along well with Yearwood, who is famous for her song “How Do I Live”. Blazy was right- the pair hit it off right away.

"When she left, he goes, 'What did you think?' I said, 'Well, it's strange, because I felt that feeling like when you just meet your wife, but I've been married for 13 months,'" The “Wrapped Up in You” singer recalled.

Brooks was married to Sandy Mahl, his college sweetheart, at the time. His commitment to spending the rest of his life with Mahl and being a good husband took priority over everything else. "Being married, it's got to be right. This is who you went to college with, and you were married in front of God and your family and everything," he confided to DeGeneres. "So you keep hacking, and you work and you work and you work. And then comes that time where you're looking at the rest of your life going, 'How do you want to live it?'"

When Brooks and Mahl divorced in late 2000, Yearwood was also single. She and Brooks began dating, and their bond quickly grew stronger.

"This was somebody I always enjoyed being around. And we had a lot more in common than I ever dreamed we did. And so we started seeing each other after the divorce," Brooks commented. "We'd known each other music-wise, but we got to see each other as people. And I've got to tell you, if you like her and don't know her, you'll love her. If you love her and don't know her, you'll worship her. She's the real deal."

"I've got to tell you, I never knew it could be like this,” the country singer said of his relationship with Yearwood. "I never knew that every day you could wake up and feel like this. And I have God and I have Ms. Yearwood to thank for this."
